ABOUT US

We’re locals. We’re parents. We’re business owners. We
are home owners, and our futures are being destroyed by dust.

The Red Dust Action Group formed because our
community deserves clean air, thriving businesses,
responsible industry practices and importantly,
the ports potential to be fully unlocked & unleashed.

Iron ore exports play an important role in South Africa but
the dust pollution destroys opportunities for locals.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to unlock and unleash the potential of the port of saldanha to create more jobs, and build equitable economic opportunities for all.

We intend doing this by eliminating the adverse environmental, social, and economic impacts associated with handling red iron ore and other commodities (i.e Dust & Noise Pollution) in the towns which fall under the Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM).

We are dedicated to advocating for a clean and sustainable port of Saldanha and its surrounding communities. We aim to hold TransNet and the licensing authorities to account to ensure that port operations are conducted in a responsible manner that safeguards the livelihoods, health, biodiversity, and economic prospects of the citizens within the SBM constituency.

Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, we strive for a future where the prosperity of the region coexists harmoniously with environmental stewardship.

Who is responsible?

Responsibility lies with the licensing authorities.

They issue permits, enforce compliance, and are legally required to protect communities and the environment under the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA).

In Saldanha and the West Coast, authority is held as follows:

  • Iron ore: West Coast District Municipality (politically governed by the Democratic Alliance)
  • Manganese & other commodities: Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (national government)
  • Storage under 100,000 tons: Saldanha Bay Municipality (politically governed by the Democratic Alliance)
  • Storage over 100,000 tons: West Coast District Municipality (politically governed by the Democratic Alliance)

If Transnet cleaned up
operations

It would mean

More direct jobs

Unlocking the ports potential

Higher exports

More industries outside the port

More industries able to use the port

Increased tourism

More indirect jobs
